Friedberg Turn Dance-Punk into a Statement of Personal Freedom
London-based Friedberg, founded by Austrian singer-songwriter Anna Friedberg, connect post-punk’s rhythmic tension with alternative rock and immediate pop hooks. Following their 2024 debut Hardcore Workout Queen, the project is developing into a broader collective with a stronger emphasis on dancefloor energy and collaborative performance. Supporting LCD Soundsystem and touring with Hot Chip helped sharpen that direction, placing Anna’s percussion-driven songwriting alongside musicians who make intricate arrangements feel instinctive. Released in October 2026, “Goodwife” introduces their second album of the same name, due on 9 April 2027 through Clouds Hill. It gives this musical evolution an emotional purpose: movement becomes a way to imagine freedom for someone whose life allowed too little of it.
Goodwife: When Being Good Means Being Good to Yourself
Co-produced by Anna Friedberg, Daniel Brandt and Hot Chip’s Al Doyle and Joe Goddard, “Goodwife” brings Friedberg’s pop instincts into a more explicitly electronic setting. Sessions in Hot Chip’s Shoreditch studio encouraged experimentation with synthesisers, while a playful reference to Inner City’s “Good Life” connects the track to dance music’s language of release. That reference carries particular weight beside the song’s title: the promise of a good life complicates the expectation of being a good wife. The dancefloor framework gives its difficult subject a sense of possibility.
Anna wrote the song for her grandmother, whom she remembers as intellectually curious, devoted to books and poetry, and someone who learned French in her seventies. According to Anna, those interests existed within an abusive marriage to a husband who resisted her having an independent life. “Goodwife” imagines a different ending, allowing her grandmother to leave codependency behind and direct care toward herself. Its emotional force comes from that act of revision: Anna uses songwriting to give a loved one the autonomy she wishes she had experienced.
Why It Matters: Dance Music Gives Personal Histories a New Sense of Agency
“Goodwife” illustrates how dance-oriented songwriting can hold painful experience and the possibility of joy within the same recording. A groove can provide the setting for imagining what comes after restriction, giving a story of lost autonomy an active, forward-looking form. The broader creative opportunity lies in using physical release to explore agency: listeners can engage with difficult histories through music that also invites participation and pleasure.
Friedberg make that connection especially meaningful by bringing an intergenerational story into their more dance-focused second era. Anna’s grandmother also influenced her interest in poetry, linking the record’s lyrical foundations to the person honoured by its title track. The result suggests a direction for dance-punk in which rhythmic confidence supports emotionally specific storytelling. Here, freedom becomes both the song’s subject and the feeling its musical setting seeks to make available.
