Oral Habit are a Brighton-based psych-punk trio known for their chaotic, fuzz-drenched sound and full-throttle live performances. What began as a home recording project for frontman Charlie Hales has evolved into a fully realised band alongside Felix Hales (drums) and Tippi Lewis (bass), pushing their sonic identity into louder, wilder territory.

Blending mid-’60s freakbeat abrasion with modern acid-punk urgency, Oral Habit thrive on distortion, echo-heavy vocals and maximalist energy. Their debut album A Broken Chord lands June 12 via Krautpop! Records, marking a major step forward for one of Brighton’s most uncompromising new acts.

“Surface Breaker” channels the band’s raw, overdriven intensity into a track that feels like it’s perpetually teetering on the edge. Fuzz-laden guitars grind against pounding drums, while vocals cut through the chaos with an almost manic clarity. The sound is abrasive but purposeful — a wall of noise shaped into something rhythmic and hypnotic.

True to their ethos of pushing every button available, the track surges forward with little restraint, yet there’s an undercurrent of tight control beneath the distortion. It feels like a mission statement for A Broken Chord: explosive, unapologetic, and impossible to ignore.

“Surface Breaker” is building buzz ahead of Oral Habit’s debut album release, positioning the band as a standout within Brighton’s fertile psych and post-punk scene. With growing underground attention and anticipation around A Broken Chord, the single showcases a band refining their chaotic energy into something sharper and more deliberate. As UK guitar music continues to embrace noisier, left-field experimentation, Oral Habit are emerging as a vital part of that movement.
