New Single • Brand New Boy — from debut album Super Deluxe (out November 20, 2026). Cardiff, Wales, UK.

The Family Battenberg Bring Glam-Rock Swagger to Modern Garage-Punk

The Family Battenberg are a Cardiff-based four-piece featuring Eliot Jones (guitar and vocals), Ethan Duck (guitar and vocals), Jessica Pritchard-Simmons (bass) and Billy Stillman (drums). Combining 1970s glam-rock, garage-punk and psychedelic rock, the band have developed a distinctive sound they call spider-rock, characterized by fuzzy guitars, infectious hooks and theatrical energy. Drawing inspiration from T. Rex, The Stooges and The White Stripes, they blend vintage rock influences with an irreverent contemporary attitude. Following their debut EP Spider Rock Forever (2025), festival appearances at SXSW and The Great Escape, and their signing to Stolen Body Records, the band are preparing their first full-length album, Super Deluxe.

Brand New Boy: The Absurdity of Seeking Social Approval

“Brand New Boy” is the second single from Super Deluxe, combining glam-rock swagger, distorted guitars and garage-punk intensity. Built around a raw, energetic arrangement, the recording preserves the spontaneity of the band's original composition. Guitarist and vocalist Ethan Duck explains that the version released is essentially the first version they wrote, performed with a single guitar and retaining studio improvisations rather than extensive editing. The result captures the directness and unpredictability of their live performances.

Lyrically, “Brand New Boy” explores social validation, insecurity and the desire to be accepted through exaggerated dark humor. The song imagines the absurd lengths someone might go to gain approval, taking the idea of changing oneself for others to disturbing extremes. Rather than presenting a conventional message about confidence, the band use provocation and satire to question why external recognition can become so important to personal identity.

Why It Matters: Garage Rock Turns Social Insecurity Into Provocative Entertainment

“Brand New Boy” demonstrates how contemporary garage-rock can combine nostalgic musical influences with relevant social commentary. Its playful glam-rock presentation contrasts with darker themes of insecurity and conformity, creating an accessible but confrontational listening experience. The band's commitment to raw recordings and spontaneous performances also reflects an alternative to increasingly polished, digitally perfected rock production.

For The Family Battenberg, the single strengthens anticipation for Super Deluxe, a ten-track debut album recorded with producer Tom Rees and designed to capture the energy of their live performances. Their combination of vintage aesthetics, humor and uncompromising instrumentation gives them a distinctive place within Britain's emerging guitar-rock scene. “Brand New Boy” transforms the pressure to seek approval into an explosive garage-punk statement about individuality, insecurity and the absurdity of modern social expectations.
