Heartworms Bring Gothic Unease onto the Dancefloor
Heartworms, the project of Jojo Orme, follows 2025’s Glutton for Punishment with a more dance-driven introduction to her next chapter. Released on October 26, “Guess I’m Stuck In The Dark” reunites her with producer Dan Carey. It expands the rhythmic possibilities of her gothic sound while keeping uncertainty at its centre.
Guess I’m Stuck In The Dark: Finding Movement Inside Self-Doubt
A pronounced groove gives the song its forward momentum, bringing dancefloor energy into Heartworms’ unsettling musical world. Carey pared the recording back after Orme developed its first version in Italy. That restraint makes rhythm central to a track whose premise involves trying to enjoy oneself alongside fear.
Orme connects its darkness with insecurity and the mind’s ability to invent threats when certainty disappears. A power cut supplied the initial spark; creative vulnerability gave it deeper meaning. My reading is that movement becomes a practical response to doubt: the song allows anxiety to remain present without letting it dictate everything.
Why It Matters: Dark Music Makes Room for Pleasure
Dance music can accommodate difficult feelings without requiring their resolution. Here, rhythmic release and psychological discomfort occupy the same space, suggesting that enjoyment need not wait for confidence.
For Heartworms, that opens a compelling direction beyond a fixed gothic identity. The song’s strongest proposition is that uncertainty can accompany forward motion.
