Tom Morello, the guitarist whose work with Rage Against the Machine helped establish politically charged rap-rock as a major force, joins Belfast trio KNEECAP on “UNCONQUERED,” one of the most confrontational collaborations on his new solo album Everyone Gets Everything They Want. Released through Mom+Pop, the record represents Morello’s return to a more uncompromising rock-oriented solo sound, with collaborators including Serj Tankian, Beartooth and his son Roman Morello. On “UNCONQUERED,” Morello’s distinctive guitar attack meets KNEECAP’s Irish rap and high-pressure delivery, connecting two generations of artists known for placing political expression at the centre of their music.
UNCONQUERED: Turning Resistance into Festival-Sized Energy
Morello approached the collaboration with a deliberately simple brief: the track had to be called “UNCONQUERED,” it needed an immediate hook, and it had to generate enough energy to erupt in a festival setting. The finished track turns those requirements into a compact 2:45 collision of heavy guitar, electronic percussion and KNEECAP’s rapid-fire vocals.
Morello describes the central idea as an “unconquered spirit”—resilience that continues despite repression and violence. Rather than tying that idea to a single location, he has described it as stretching from college campuses and refugee camps to concert stages from Dublin to Detroit. KNEECAP bring their own Belfast identity and politically outspoken approach to that concept, while Morello treats the guitar almost as another disruptive voice inside the track.
Why It Matters: Protest Music Is Crossing Genre and Generational Lines Again
“UNCONQUERED” highlights how contemporary protest music increasingly moves across rock, rap and electronic music rather than belonging to one specific genre. Morello emerged from an earlier era when Rage Against the Machine demonstrated how hip-hop rhythms, heavy guitar and political lyrics could coexist; KNEECAP represent a newer generation using rap, the Irish language and provocative performance to communicate their own perspectives.
