Joe Darley and Charlie Smith share vocals and guitars alongside Gina Edwards on keys, Finnbar Simmonds on bass, James Darley on guitar, Miren Summers on violin and Ben Court on drums, creating music that moves between alt-folk tenderness and alternative-rock intensity. Formerly operating under a succession of names—including Slow Country—the group have gradually developed a distinctive world of layered guitars, strings, overlapping voices and songs preoccupied with modernity, nostalgia and longing. Their new single “Through Your Teeth”, produced by Bill Ryder-Jones, pushes that approach into an ambitious six-minute emotional crescendo.
Through Your Teeth: When Someone Gets Under the Skin
Charlie Smith describes “Through Your Teeth” as an exorcism inspired by the irrational sensation of someone or something getting under the skin almost instantaneously. Rather than calmly analysing that reaction, the song becomes an attempt to regain control—to expel feelings that continue lingering after the moment that created them has passed.
The arrangement gives those emotions time to accumulate. Gentle passages and strings gradually collide with increasingly forceful guitars, layered vocals and a cathartic refrain, moving between folk intimacy and indie-rock maximalism across almost six minutes.
