The Shabs are a Cape Town-based folk-punk trio blending sincere, melodic sing-along songwriting with the raw drive of DIY punk rock.

Made up of Jon Shaban (guitar/vocals), Ryan McArthur (double bass/backing vocals), and Jon Case (drums), the band often collaborates with female vocalists, adding dynamic texture to their high-energy sound. Their music channels influences like Frank Turner, Erik Petersen, and Against Me!, but carries its own distinctly South African edge.

Since releasing their debut album Folk Is Dead in 2016, The Shabs have toured relentlessly across South Africa and Europe. They’ve appeared at major festivals including Rocking The Daisies, Mieliepop, STRAB, Park Acoustics, and FORR, alongside multiple six-week European tours through the UK, Germany, Austria, Switzerland, Belgium, and beyond. Festival highlights include Mighty Sounds (twice), No Borders No Nations, Earthquake, and Ziva Ulice. In 2018, they teamed up with Rambling Bones for the split album Deja View.

“On Top of the World” captures everything The Shabs do best: anthemic choruses, driving rhythms, and lyrics built for communal release.

With strummed acoustic urgency layered over punchy drums and upright bass, the track radiates optimism without losing its grit. It feels celebratory yet grounded — the kind of song designed for crowded festival fields or sweat-soaked club shows where every voice joins in.

The sincerity in the delivery gives the anthem weight. It’s not hollow positivity — it’s earned joy, shouted back at the world.

Why it is trending

Folk-punk’s global resurgence has reignited interest in bands that prioritise honesty, melody, and communal energy. The Shabs’ international touring history and festival pedigree position them as veterans of that space rather than newcomers.

“On Top of the World” resonates because it balances DIY authenticity with undeniable hooks. In a genre built on connection and catharsis, The Shabs continue to prove why their brand of “High Quality Folk Punk” travels so well — across borders, across scenes, and straight into the crowd.
