New German Cinema is the solo project of Jessica Weiss, best known as the vocalist of the indie/dream-pop band Fear of Men. Under this new moniker, Weiss explores a more cinematic, introspective pop direction that draws on European art-house influences and post-punk sensibilities. Her forthcoming debut album Pain Will Polish Me—recorded between London and Los Angeles with producer Alex DeGroot (who has worked with Zola Jesus and Cate Le Bon)—is described as a meditation on themes of intimacy, identity, and the emotional spaces where love dissolves and reforms. The project’s aesthetic also nods to classic cinema, notably inspired by the work of filmmaker Rainer Werner Fassbinder and the emotional complexity of mid-century European art films. Pain Will Polish Me is out on March 27, 2026 via Felte Records.

“My Mistake” is the lead single from Pain Will Polish Me, featuring Carson Cox of Merchandise. What began as an Italo-disco experiment evolved into a restless, goth-tinged club anthem—atmospheric, propulsive, and emotive—anchored by drum-machine rhythms and layered vocals that reflect the song’s themes of love, vulnerability, and the actions we regret or can’t undo. The track’s aesthetic and its accompanying video draw on visual motifs of psychological tension, desire, and alienation, much like the art-house cinema that inspires the project.
