Formed in Sheffield, England, Hard As Nails are Alfie Arno, Ella Rose Arno, Dylan Steed and Alfie Chester, a four-piece emerging from the city's thriving DIY underground with a collision of dance-punk, synthesisers, sampling, distorted guitars and pummelling basslines. With members hailing from Sheffield, Manchester and Cambridge and now split between Sheffield and Brighton, the band retain strong roots in the Steel City's independent scene. “AI”, released alongside “Stray Cats” through Delicious Clam Records, is their debut release—a raw introduction to a band determined to make technological experimentation feel physical, unruly and unmistakably personal.
AI: Fighting Artificial Intelligence with Synthesisers
“AI” embraces an intriguing contradiction. Hard As Nails are openly critical of generative AI's impact on creativity, yet they are equally enthusiastic about technology as a creative instrument. Their response isn't to retreat from machines but to reclaim them: synthesisers and sampling become tools for expression, driven by pounding bass, drums and the volatile energy of a live band.
Recorded by Eoin Loveless on an industrial estate in Sheffield, the track channels that tension into something deliberately abrasive and physical.
