Based in Brooklyn, New York, GIFT have built their identity by dissolving the boundaries between psychedelia, shoegaze, electronic music, new wave and alternative rock. Led by vocalist and guitarist TJ Freda, the five-piece now enter a heavier phase with “Hand To The Flame,” the lead single from their third album Frenzy For The Thrill. Written after Freda travelled to Los Angeles in early 2025, the new material trades some of the dreamier transcendence of the band's earlier records for bigger beats, heavier guitars and a more visceral sense of urgency.
Hand To The Flame: Chasing Something Even When You Know It Will Burn
“Hand To The Flame” turns the myth of Icarus into a metaphor for the irresistible pursuit of passion. Freda describes the song as repeatedly moving toward something you know may eventually hurt you, driven by the belief—or hope—that this time the outcome might somehow be different. It places desire, ambition and obsession dangerously close together, finding exhilaration in the chase even when the consequences are already visible.
Musically, that compulsion becomes momentum. Heavy guitars, big electronic beats, trippy synths and an increasingly cathartic vocal performance push the song relentlessly forward, connecting GIFT's psychedelic foundations with a tougher strain of dance-rock. Co-produced by Freda and Teddy Mars, the track feels less interested in escaping anxiety than converting tension into physical energy.

A growing strain of alternative music is moving away from carefully controlled coolness toward something bigger, messier and more instinctive.
