The Xcerts are a long-standing Scottish alt-rock trio formed in 2001 and based in Brighton (vocals/guitar Murray Macleod, bass Jordan Smith, drums Tom Heron). Known for blending indie rock, grunge-leaning energy, and emotionally direct songwriting, they’ve built a decades-long reputation as one of the UK’s most consistent and impactful alternative acts. Across their career, The Xcerts have merged cathartic emotional honesty with melodic heft on multiple albums and energetic live shows, earning them a devoted fanbase and critical respect. Their sound has evolved through releases like In the Cold Wind We Smile, There Is Only You, Hold On to Your Heart and Learning How To Live And Let Go, scattering elements of indie, post-hardcore, and power pop into cathartic, hook-driven rock.
“do it to myself” marks The Xcerts’ first original music since 2023 and their debut release for FLG Records. The track reconnects with the band’s raw, grunge-laced alt-rock roots, pairing urgent, jagged guitars with vocals that are both vulnerable and intense. Written collaboratively in the same room for the first time since their last album, the song channels a sense of immediacy, emotional conflict, and self-reflection, with frontman Murray Macleod describing it as an exploration of his own fragility and tendency toward self-sabotage when things aren’t right. The result is a hard-charging rock statement that feels uncomfortable, honest, and deeply human—an explosive reintroduction to a band operating with renewed energy and purpose.
