Youth Sector is a five-piece art-rock/post-punk outfit based in Brighton, UK. Formed in 2018, the band consists of Nick Tompkins (guitar, vocals), Josh Doyle (bass, music composer), Brad Moore (guitar, music composer), Harvey Dent (synth), and Karl Tomlin (drums, music composer). They are known for their agitated, robotic sound "packed with witty barbs and boopy bits," drawing comparisons to Talking Heads, DEVO, and Tubeway Army.
Youth Sector quickly gained critical praise from publications like DIY, The Line Of Best Fit, Clash, and Dork, and have received support from BBC Radio 1 (Jack Saunders, Abbie McCarthy) and Elton John (Apple Music). Their music often delves into social commentary with an eccentric wit, tackling topics from consumerism to political turmoil, while maintaining an "unpredictability" and "love of the sonic possibilities of a good pop song." They are also noted for their strong visual aesthetic, including retro suits. Their previous EPs include Adult Contemporary (2022) and Quarrels (2023).
"Break Something" is a defiant new single by Youth Sector, released on June 10, 2025 (with an official music video released June 11, 2025). It is the third single to be taken from their highly anticipated debut album, "Pop Couture," which is scheduled for release on September 19, 2025, via Dance To The Radio. The song was mixed by Richard Wilkinson (Bombay Bicycle Club, Spector, Kaiser Chiefs).
Lyrically, "Break Something" is described as an "urgent call to arms" and a reminder to "open our eyes and take action." The band explains it was written as a personal reminder that "it's all well and good having strong opinions and values, but it's standing by them and backing them up that's important especially in moments where it's uncomfortable to do so." It's an anthem of rebellion, urging listeners to scream and fight, recognizing that "the world is not perfect and it's in our hands to do something about it."
Musically, "Break Something" embodies Youth Sector's energetic style: a refreshingly rebellious and in-your-face blend of melodies and lyrics. It features a tight and forward-driving rhythm section, powerful guitar tones, and dynamic melodies, making it an "indie-rock with an eye on the pop charts" that is both euphoric and uplifting.
