The Moving Stills are a four-piece Pop/Alt Rock band from the Central Coast of New South Wales (NSW), Australia, specifically Macmasters Beach. The band consists of Tom Mahler (lead vocals, songwriter), Mike Drennan, Brad Guthmann, and Ben Day. They are known for creating music that perfectly encapsulates the feeling of "summer days at the beach," blending surf flavors, sweet garage/80's New York sounds, and infectious pop melodies.
Emerging from two years out of high school, their early music like "Nineteen" (2018) navigated the "bitter sweet inevitability of age and adulting." Their sound has since matured, emitting a more deliberate and refined quality, while still maintaining their signature blend of acoustic-driven numbers and sticky surf-rock. They released their debut full-length album, Sunshine Corner, in 2022, and followed it with Wabi Sabi in 2023, which was a triple j Feature Album and hit #2 on the ARIA Vinyl Chart. The Moving Stills have a strong live presence and continue to release music that reflects real-life scenarios and emotional conflicts.
"Can't Be Like This Forever" is a single by The Moving Stills, officially released on May 27, 2025. It is also featured on their upcoming EP, Half Moon Bay, which is set for release on July 4, 2025. The song was produced by Pip Norman, Rob Amoruso, and Thomas Porter, and its lyrics were penned by Tom Mahler, Ben Day, Harry O'Brien, and Charlie Hole.
Lyrically, "Can't Be Like This Forever" is a poignant reflection on the desire for change and improvement, both personally and societally. The lyrics convey a sense of dissatisfaction with the current state of affairs and a longing for something better.
