The Kowloons are a fresh and rapidly emerging Britpop/indie rock band from Liverpool, UK. Formed in 2022 by twin brothers Stephen Ng (vocals, backing guitar) and Anthony Ng (drums), the lineup expanded to include Mason Jones (lead guitar) and Bobby Griffiths (bass). They are celebrated for revitalizing Britpop with their fusion of jangly harmonies and a "Northern acoustic garage pop" sound. Their music is rich, nostalgic, and filled with catchy hooks and melodies, often described as sounding like a "lost polaroid from your youth." The band boasts powerful songwriting, drawing inspiration from film, literature, and the rich musical history of their home city, particularly the Merseybeat sound of the late '80s and early '90s. The Kowloons are quickly establishing themselves as a band to watch, with a growing fanbase and support from various music outlets.

The Song: "I Don't Care"

"I Don't Care" is a brand new single from The Kowloons, officially released on May 23, 2025. It's described as one of their most polished and characteristic tracks, which they feel has helped them "land on their signature sound" – a mix of '60s pop and '90s Britpop, "catchy and to the point, with all the fat trimmed off."

Lyrically, "I Don't Care" is delivered with an upbeat rhythm and an infectious nature. It conveys a narrative that feels "spoken like a childhood friend trying to console you." Lead singer Stephen Ng has stated that the song is about "having a tightly knit bond with someone that the outside world couldn't understand," referencing his relationship with his twin brother, Anthony. Despite its lively tone, the song also presents a sense of melancholic nostalgia and explores emotional complexities, with themes of defiance and perhaps a casual dismissal of external judgment when one has a strong, understood connection. Musically, it features delightfully jangly guitars, a warm and textured West Coast vibe, and call-and-response vocals, creating a bright, fresh, and well-balanced sound that aims to evoke a "sweet summer" feeling.
