PROJECTOR is a three-piece Alt Rock/Indie band hailing from Brighton, UK. The band features Edward Ensbury on guitar/vocals, Lucy Sheehan on bass/vocals, and Callum Marinho on drums (who replaced Demelza Mather in late 2019).
Since forming in 2018, PROJECTOR has carved out a distinctive niche by blending brooding 1980s darkwave, My Bloody Valentine's wall-of-sound pop, and the industrial pulse of Joy Division. They are known for their angular, industrial drum machines fused with hook-laden alt-rock, and lush melodies combined with frenzied post-punk. PROJECTOR prioritizes sonic breadth and an experimental approach to pop, often exploring the "true insanity and grit of modern life, psyche and politics" in their nuanced expressions. They've gained support from BBC Radio 6 and toured Europe with acts like Cleopatrick. Their debut album, NOW WHEN WE TALK IT'S VIOLENCE, was released in February 2024.
"It Surely Has Been Hell"Â is a new single by PROJECTOR, officially released on July 15, 2025.
Lyrically, the song is described by the band themselves as "a really nasty song" that is "a bit uncomfortable to listen to." They also feel it's "quite a lonely song." These descriptions suggest a track that delves into themes of deep personal struggle, anguish, isolation, and perhaps a reflection on a difficult period of time. The title itself, "It Surely Has Been Hell," directly conveys a sense of profound suffering or an arduous journey.
