liffords is an indie rock-pop quartet hailing from Cork, Ireland. Formed by rhythm guitarist and vocalist Iona Lynch and drummer Dan Ryan (who started the band after being inspired by the movie Sing Street), the lineup also includes Harry Menton (lead guitar, backing vocals), Gavin Dawkins (bass, trumpet, backing vocals), and newer member Locon O'Toole (keys). The band is known for their heartfelt songwriting, atmospheric melodies, and raw authenticity. Their sound is described as blending rich, textured guitars with hauntingly beautiful soundscapes and driving, hook-laden beats, drawing comparisons to contemporary alt-rock acts like Wolf Alice and iconic Irish band The Cranberries. Cliffords are also recognized for their lyrical themes that often touch upon Cork, mental health, love, friendship, literature, and nature, all imbued with a strong sense of Irish identity and storytelling. They have gained significant momentum, performing at various festivals across the UK, Ireland, and Europe. Their debut EP, "Strawberry Scented," was self-released, and they have recently signed with the newly formed label Soil To The Sun.

The Song: "My Favourite Monster"

"My Favourite Monster" is a recent single from Cliffords, released on May 28, 2025. It is a key track from their upcoming EP, "Salt of the Lee," which is set for release on May 30, 2025. The song was produced by Richie Kennedy at London's Battery Studios, marking the band's first collaboration with a producer.

Lyrically, vocalist Iona Lynch describes "My Favourite Monster" as a "love song to someone you don't like but feel drawn to." She wrote it about an individual in Cork whom she would always stop to talk to, despite a mutual dislike. Drawing parallels from her reading of Mary Shelley's Frankenstein, Lynch envisioned a connection between herself and this person, akin to Frankenstein and his monster. The song delves into the idea that many traits disliked in the other person were also reflected in herself, leading to a strange sense of understanding between them, even if they'll never truly get along. Musically, the track is described as a soaring and cinematic epic, beating at the heart of the EP, showcasing fantastic vocals and vivid lyrics, and cementing Cliffords' reputation for crafting emotionally rich and ambitious songs.
