Animal Collective is an American experimental pop band formed in Baltimore County, Maryland, in 1999. The core members are Avey Tare (David Portner), Panda Bear (Noah Lennox), Geologist (Brian Weitz), and Deakin (Josh Dibb), though records released under the Animal Collective name may feature contributions from any or all of them.
Known for their constantly evolving and eclectic sound, Animal Collective blends genres such as psychedelic pop, neo-psychedelia, experimental rock, electronic, and freak folk. Their music is characterized by innovative use of loops, drones, sampling, intricate vocal harmonies, and sound collage, creating a unique and often immersive auditory experience. Having met in school and started collaborating young, they established their own record label, Paw Tracks, in 1999. They rose to prominence in the 2000s, defining a significant part of the independent experimental rock landscape and achieving commercial success with albums like Merriweather Post Pavilion (2009).
"Love On The Big Screen" is the brand-new single from Animal Collective, officially released on June 25, 2025, via Domino. A limited-edition 7-inch single, featuring the B-side "Buddies On the Blackboard," is set to follow on August 1.
The track was produced by Avey Tare and Adam McDaniel, engineered and mixed by McDaniel at Drop of Sun Studios in Asheville, North Carolina, and mastered by Dave Cooley. "Love On The Big Screen" is described as a "shimmering new single" that showcases the band's ability to weave "technicolor textures into a woozy, emotive meditation on mediated love and perception." It features their trademark off-kilter rhythms, layered vocals, and an analog-warped warmth, accompanied by a "glitchy, dreamlike visualiser" by longtime collaborator Danny Perez. This release marks Animal Collective's first new music in 2025, following their 2023 album Isn't It Now? and last year's live album Sung Tongs Live.
