Maruja are a Manchester-based rock band formed in 2014. Their sound blends post-punk, noise rock, jazz-rock, art-rock, and experimental elements—walls of guitars, saxophone, pulsing drums and bass, intense vocals. The current lineup includes Harry Wilkinson (vocals/guitar), Joe Carroll (saxophone/vocals), Matt Buonaccorsi (bass), and Jacob Hayes (drums). Their music is raw, urgent, socially aware, and emotionally charged, and they signed to the label Music for Nations. Their debut studio album Pain to Power dropped in September 2025.

“Bloodsport” is the opening track on Pain to Power. It’s a wild, frenzied blast of energy—thrashing guitars and harsh emotion that capture immediate tension. Thematically, the song addresses mental health under pressure and the impact of society and world events on the individual. The lyrics reflect frustration: feeling choked by expectation, swallowing fears, the cost of silence. “Profit from our illness … human resources will pay … pressure’s got us choking … swallowing our fears …” lines resonate with urgency and raw honesty.
