Movie of the Day: Sonne (2022) by Kurdwin Ayub

Three girlfriends record a video in which they dance and sing to R.E.M.'s Losing My Religion while dressed in their burkas. Yesmin is Kurdish, Bella has Yugoslav roots, while Nati is from Austria. The video goes viral so Yasmin's father begins to organize the girls' performances at parties attended by Kurdish Muslims. Yasmin slowly becomes overwhelmed, because all the attention obscures the meaning of the funny video intended to draw attention to the unequal treatment of women in burqas. Bella and Nati, on the other hand, befriend two young Kurds and become fascinated by foreign culture. In Sonne, Kurdwin Ayub asks questions about the position of Muslim women in Islam's patriarchal culture, draws portraits of teenagers subsumed in their online careers, and spies on the Kurdish community in contemporary, multicultural Austria. Winner GWFF Best First Feature Award, Berlin International Film Festival 2022. Other 3 nomintaions international film festivals.
