(Documentary) Movie of the Day: Adoration (2022) by Pauline Curnier Jardin

Adoration was born from the collaboration between the French artist Pauline Curnier Jardin, the curators Francesco Urbano Ragazzi and the Venetian cooperative Rio Terà dei Pensieri which works with incarcerated people for their reintegration into the world of work. On the occasion of the presentation of the LIAF - Lofoten International Art Festival in Venice, the curators invited the artist to carry out a collaborative project with the sixty inmates of the Giudecca women's prison. The video, whose script and animations were created by the artist together with the inmates, takes its cue from the history of the building in which the prison is located which was once the Monastery of the Convertites. Here, starting from the 16th century, the nuns, mainly former prostitutes, performed in theatrical performances open to the citizens during Carnival. During these moments, the nuns, free to wear secular clothes, could for a moment suspend the social rules that forced them to a life of seclusion.
